Klein vs Knipex — which lineman's pliers are actually worth the premium?

I've been using Klein D213-9NE for years and they've been fine. A master electrician on my crew uses Knipex 09 02 240 and swears they're dramatically better. The Knipex are about twice the price.

Is there a real functional difference, or is this a "name brand prestige" thing? Both seem to cut wire fine in my experience.

Both are professional tools. If you're trimming out an office building, Kleins are fine. If you're doing heavy industrial where you're on the same pair of pliers 8 hours a day for years, the Knipex ergonomics reduce hand fatigue noticeably. For most commercial electrical work, Kleins are plenty.

Knipex metallurgy and finish is genuinely better — tighter jaw tolerances, harder cutting edges, better corrosion resistance. If you're doing a lot of pulling and gripping (not just cutting), the Knipex jaw geometry grabs stranded conductors better without slipping. The difference is noticeable but whether it's worth 2x depends on how much you use them.

I've buried both in concrete, dropped them off scaffolding, and left them in the rain. Klein tools are good American quality. Knipex is excellent German quality. After 8 years of daily use, the Klein cuts are still sharp. The Knipex I bought as a test lasted longer before needing sharpening. But at 2x cost, I'm buying Kleins and a spare.
