NABCEP exam — worth it early in your career or wait for more experience?

I'm 2 years into solar installation, mostly residential string systems with some light commercial. I'm considering the NABCEP PV Installation Professional exam.

From those who have it — is the certification worth the study time and exam cost early in a career, or is it more valuable after you've accumulated more field time? What did it actually do for your career?

My contractor required it for anyone who wanted to sign off on permit applications. That alone was worth the $400 exam fee — it made me more valuable to the company and gave me more autonomy on jobs. If your employer doesn't require it yet, they probably will.

The study process itself is valuable. The NABCEP Body of Knowledge covers system design, shading analysis, string sizing, electrical theory, and NEC Article 690. If you can pass the exam at 2 years in, you probably have a solid enough foundation to do residential work safely and effectively. Don't wait until it's "convenient" — it never is.

Got my NABCEP at 3 years in and it accelerated my career significantly. On the commercial side, many GCs and developers specify "NABCEP certified" as a requirement for lead installer positions. It also helped me understand system design theory better — the exam covers a lot of ground that you can do without understanding but shouldn't. Do it before you plateau.
