Data center rack build — fiber and copper management on a 42U open frame
Finished a 42U open-frame rack build for a medium business data center expansion. About 180 patch cables total plus 12 fiber trunks.
Process: patch panels at top, switches in middle, servers at bottom (weight distribution). Cable management: velcro only (no zip ties on live patch cables — you'll thank yourself later). Color coding: blue for client copper, yellow for inter-switch fiber, orange for storage fiber, grey for management.
Every cable labeled at both ends with Brady labels — port ID, source, and destination.
The initial build took 3 days for one tech. Future adds will take 20 minutes because everything is labeled and documented.
