R-454B first season — what has actually bitten you that the training did not cover? Refrigeration

First full cooling season with A2L equipment in volume and I want to compare notes while it is fresh.

What the training covered fine: mildly flammable classification, no open flame, sensor and mitigation requirements, dedicated recovery equipment.

What has actually caused me problems:

Fitting availability. Left-hand thread service fittings on some manufacturers, standard on others, and the supply house stocks about a third of what I need. I now carry both.

Charge accuracy matters more. 454B glide is small, around 0.2K, so it behaves close to 410A, but the charge windows the manufacturers publish are noticeably tighter. Weighing in is no longer optional.

Leak sensor false trips. Two callbacks this month, both indoor units shutting down on a sensor fault with no leak. Both were sensors reading a solvent — one was a homeowner painting, one was a cleaning crew.

Recovery machine turnaround. One A2L-rated recovery machine on the truck means you are sequencing jobs around it.

The solvent false trip is the one nobody warned us about and it is going to be a recurring callback forever. Those sensors are not selective — they are looking for a class of hydrocarbon and paint fumes, adhesive, aerosol and some cleaners all read.

What I have started doing: when I commission an A2L system I tell the homeowner explicitly, in writing on the invoice, that painting or heavy cleaning near the air handler can trip the safety and how to reset it. Cut my callbacks on that to nearly zero because now it is a known behavior instead of a broken air conditioner.

On the commercial side the mitigation logic is the part that catches people. The sensor does not just shut the unit down, it is supposed to command the indoor fan on to disperse. If that unit is on a BAS and the BAS has its own fan control logic, you can end up with the two fighting each other.

Found one where the building controller was overriding the mitigation fan call. That is a life safety function being defeated by a graphics page somebody set up in 2019.

That is a genuinely alarming failure mode and I have not thought about it once. I have three A2L RTUs going on a BAS job next month. Adding a mitigation test to my commissioning checklist today.

Charge accuracy — agreed, and I would go further. I have gone to weighing in on everything, including 410A retrofits, purely because switching methods between systems is how mistakes happen. Pick one method and use it on every machine.

Also: the tighter charge windows mean a sloppy vacuum hurts you more than it used to. I am pulling to 300 microns and doing a proper decay test on every A2L install. Adds twenty minutes. Saves the callback.

Student question — for the fittings, is there a reference anywhere that lists which manufacturers use left-hand thread? Or is it just accumulated experience at this point?

Accumulated experience, unfortunately. The manufacturers each document their own and nobody has cross-referenced them. If somebody wants a genuinely useful project, that table is it.

Adding one: A2L changed my attic work. The mitigation requirements assume the equipment is in a space where dispersion works. An air handler in a tight sealed attic closet with no makeup path is a design problem now, not just an access annoyance. I have had to add transfer grilles on two retrofits.
